Growing up in Kent, at the age of 11 when my mum asked if I wanted to move to Devon the thought of being surrounded by horses and fields made me buzz. Being the little brat, I was, I asked if I could get a pony if we moved.
Here, my mind went wild, my own pony with me riding across the fields, pulling him around the field and putting pretty bows in his hair. In reality, I did put bows in his hair, well, when he let me and it ended up him pulling me around the field.
Oh, and he was a shetland… couldn’t even ride him. This pony, Winston, kicked and dragged me around the field daily, nicknamed the little shit, Winston even got sent to horsey boot camp to sort out his behaviour.
But there is just something about him I can’t help but love. I’m not sure if it was because I grew up with him or whether with being my first real pet, which was solely my responsibility, he taught me self-discipline and commitment. But whatever that little shit did, I have a lot to thank him for because I don’t think I would be focused and motivated in what I do now, with my fitness. He taught me, no matter how many times you get dragged around that field you don’t give up on something you love.
Although Winston is on loan now due to time, I’ll always stick to my promise that I told him the day I got him, the fluffy ginger 6-month-old Shetland scared in his new home, my 11-year-old self, hugged him and promised I would never sell him.
