Top tips if you’re ‘going healthy’

People ask me why I blog all the time, some try to banter me about it, others really supportive. But the real reason is so I can share everything I’ve learnt over the past 2 years so people don’t have to make the same mistakes, spend hours reading scientific articles and endless trial and errors like I did.

I remember my first gym session like it was yesterday. I felt completely lost and swarmed with information having PT’s telling me 1000000 different ways that you can build a bum and 5000 ways to get abs. However, I can’t deny the fact that over the past years I’ve learnt so much & wish I could go back and tell my old self some of my top tips.

It’s the new year & most, including myself, have set our new years resolutions with ‘use the gym more’, ‘eat better’ and ‘get fit’ being some of the most popular. So, if you’re starting back after a few years off or if you’re just starting out… here’s what I would love to tell my old self when I first started.

– You can’t be picky…
Wanting to keep your boobs and bum but have a thigh gap tends not to go hand in hand. I dropped 2 dress sizes, but also 2 cup sizes. If you’re the lucky few that this doesn’t happen to… I hate you.

– You don’t have to run for days…
The man himself Joe Wicks (The Body Coach) is the king of HIIT… short bursts of exercises for around 20 minutes to get you into fat burning mode is plenty. So, you can sit down and enjoy the soaps after all…

– Rest, rest & rest some more…
Your whole body is telling you no but that magazine cover star is telling you to get your arse in the gym or you won’t look like her… ignore the bitch, she’s been photoshopped anyway. Rest is so important unless you want to crash and burn at the first hurdle.. which you don’t by the way…

– Cheat…
That bacon and cheeseburger followed by chocolate brownies is absolutely ok if we keep it to once a week… to stop us going insane, this also stops us bingeing at the weekends. I’m a serial weekend binger, always have been because I haven’t organised my cheat meals. (That’s my new years resolution if you’re interested)

– Carbs are ok…
Oats & sweet potato are not evil… but having no energy and feeling like poo is…

– Invest in decent, well-fitted workout wear…
There is nothing more embarrassing than your trousers falling down half way through sprints on the treadmill …. or splitting while squatting…in front of that hot guy.

– Prepare…
I didn’t sort out my lunch the night before & then I’m surprised when I find myself tucking into a Starbucks sarni and two cakes… I can never just choose one so it’s always two cakes. I then tend to cry about how I’ll never get abs. So, don’t make the same mistakes I did, also prepare your food.

– Don’t forget to enjoy life…
Turns out we aren’t robots and sometimes living a little is exactly what we need to remotivate.

– You can’t out train a bad diet…
I’ve tried it and sat on my bed crying into a tub of ice cream after I’ve just been to the gym wondering why I no longer look like I did a few months back… 80% diet / 20% exercise

– Everyone has to start somewhere…
I always found myself paranoid that the super sexy girl with killer abs is laughing at me in the gym, and I still do… but it’s so important to remember we are all there for the same reason. Also, if we slipped up a few times this week, let’s not punish ourselves. Accept it and move on, tomorrow is a new day.

P.s hope you like my new blog name… original ey?
